Baby Richins Due December 6, 2019!

You guys! I can finally shout it from the rooftops... WE ARE HAVING A BABY!!!!! We couldn't be more excited to meet this sweet baby and just feel so grateful that everything has been so smooth this time around. I will be 13 weeks on Friday and had an appointment today and baby is looking great with a heartbeat of 159! And s/he actually looks like a BABY now. I'm in love!

With Charlie, it was such a rollercoaster. I was still grieving the loss of our first baby and then BOOM I was pregnant again. I was really just so anxious and worried the entire pregnancy because losing my first baby really really really shook me. Plus it took 9 months to get Charlie, so it was just such an emotional journey. I recognize that 9 months really isn't that long, but for me it was. I had been ready to have a baby for YEARS prior to trying and was patiently waiting for Landon to be ready so 9 months really felt like an eternity.

With this baby, everything has just been straight forward and smooth. I found out I was pregnant on March 29th, like two days after we booked our trips to NYC and Hawaii. I honestly would NOT have booked the trips if I knew I was going to be pregnant already but obviously I didn't think it was going to be happening anytime soon. I was SHOCKED. And it's funny because I've always said I would never have a baby in December... well here we are! ;) Luckily the baby is due early December so I'll be having him/her the end of November. That's far enough from Christmas right?!

My test was so light because I always test so early but it was definitely there. I really was in shock!!

To surprise Landon, I put Charlie in his "Big Bro" shirt (by the way he threw a FIT that morning and did NOT want to wear the shirt). Charlie jumped into bed and Landon tickled him for a few minutes and was just clueless to the shirt. Finally I had to say, "Charlie, tell Dad about your new shirt!" It was really cute once he realized what was going on.

When we told Charlie that there's a baby in Mom's tummy he lifted up his shirt to tell us there's a baby in his tummy too. It was sooo funny! He went on a date with Nini and Papa that morning and told them alllll about the baby in his tummy.. Oh my gosh we were DYING when they told us! Luckily I had a good cover up because I had actually just had a check up a few weeks prior with my OBGYN so I told them that I had explained to Charlie that we were going to see the doctor who took Charlie out of my belly and how he used to live in my tummy. Oh boy... :)

My doctor is so awesome and let me do blood tests to check my hCG (pregnancy hormone) levels to make sure it was doubling like it should. My hCG was definitely doubling fast and was much higher than averages that I was looking at online (it was 36k at 6 weeks and 112k at 7 weeks!) I was actually really worried that I might be having twins! But I guess I just have higher hCG than average which might explain why I get so sick.

My tests the day after my first positive. The lines were much more clear and then getting that positive digital is always so exciting! I will not tell you how many pregnancy tests I took over the next month....

It was soooo hard to keep it from family this time because last time we were in Oregon and I didn't have to see anyone... I'm just the least sneaky person in the world! On top of that, Daren (Landon's dad) was staying with us and I was like carrying Saltines around and running upstairs to puke. Good thing it wasn't a woman staying at our house because she definitely would have figured it out haha! Once we told Daren he was like... oh my gosh how did I not put that together?! :)

I started throwing up at like 5.5 weeks with this baby and with Charlie I didn't throw up until 8 weeks so I definitely think I'm more sick this time. Maybe I won't be sick the whole time this time though? Luckily I'm not sick the entire day and do okay during the day but man once 4pm hits I'm just miserable and mostly have to lay down and then throw up nightly. On top of being sick earlier, my belly has decided to poke out like right away? I look 18 weeks pregnant! I had to crop out my stomach out of so many pictures that I was posting because I just look very pregnant already. I know the baby isn't very big yet so it's just bloat or something? I have no idea what's going on!

At 6 weeks and 1 day, we went to Riverton Hospital for an ultrasound. I was just anxious and wanted to see a heart beat and we were able to see cute little Charlie at 6w1d and his heart was just beating away. Well, I guess this baby is shy because they could only see the yolk sac. I was honestly devastated and fearing the worst. I cried a lot. Landon was hopeful and we decided to announce a few days later to our families on Charlie's birthday. Everyone was so excited!

A week later, my sister Emma who is an OBGYN, did an ultrasound for us. It was so cute because the minute the baby was on the screen she yelled, "HEART BEAT!" It was such a relief to see our baby and that heart beating away! We were soooo relieved and happy!!! I really couldn't believe it.

Since then we've had two doctor appointments and have seen the baby two more times. I don't have any pics of those ones because the machine is so ancient and can't print pics but man, we love seeing our baby. Charlie is so cute and loves to see the baby too. He talks about the baby in his tummy and how he gets to hold the baby. He's going to be the cutest big brother and I really can't wait to see him with his sibling!

With Charlie, we did genetic testing and found out he was a boy at 11 weeks. But I have a different insurance plan now and the test isn't covered so I have to wait until 15/16 weeks and I'm DYING to know. Seriously dying. I honestly do not have a gender preference and will be happy either way but I just want to know! Emma will do an ultrasound for us, so hopefully the baby cooperates and we can know in the next 2-3 weeks. I feel like I'm having another boy but I guess we'll see!

The excitement this time feels a little different because I actually know what it feels like to meet your baby and how overwhelming that love is. So I feel like I'm more excited because I know exactly what I'm getting into and how amazing it is. On top of how excited I am to see Charlie hold his little sibling and how sweet they will be together! I can't believe we are going to have TWO kids!

I have a hard time to be motivated to do anything right now because of the sickness/exhaustion but I really want to do pregnancy updates like I did with Charlie. So hopefully I can stay on top of that. I have loved going back and reading my Charlie updates and comparing that pregnancy with this one. It's just really special to read back on old blog posts so I have to keep reminding myself how important it is and force myself to do it.

Anyway, we are all SO excited and can't wait to meet you Baby Richins! And we love you so much already!!

Charlie is Potty Trained!

I'm so proud of my sweet boy! He is officially potty trained (other than at night/naps of course!) We have done a few "rounds" of trying to potty training which mostly led to me going crazy. Charlie is just very stubborn and we would spend an entire morning just trying to get him to SIT on the toilet, let alone actually go potty.

When we got back from Hawaii, we decided it was time to be serious and surprisingly Charlie did awesome! He started to tell me when he needed to go potty, instead of me spending 30 minutes trying to force him to take a potty break. He only had 1 or 2 accidents the first few days and then eventually no accidents. On the first day of no accidents, Charlie got Mac from Cars as a reward and since that day has only had occasional accidents!

Maui and Hawaii!

This was our first "big" vacation with Charlie and we were so excited to bring him with us to one of our favorite places... Maui and Hawaii (the Big Island)! Then two days after we booked our flight, I found out I was PREGNANT and kind of started freaking out. I was going to be 10 weeks, which is smack dab in the middle of the worst part of pregnancy as far as puking goes. I was soooo nervous and suddenly didn't want to go. But it actually wasn't nearly as bad as I imagined it would be, so I'm glad we booked the trip before I knew I was pregnant because I would not have agreed to go!

Getting through security with all of our stuff (3 carry on bags, 3 backpacks, stroller, and carseat) was not fun. We were basically a traveling circus! But Charlie was soooo excited to fly on a big airplane. His little grin and giggle when the plane took off was just the cutest thing. He LOVED it. And he did such a good job on the flight! He took a little nap, watched movies, ate lotssss of snacks, and colored/played with stickers. We were so proud of him because sitting still for long stretches is definitely not in the norm for our busy boy! I'm sure having him strapped in his carseat was the trick.

We flew to Maui first and spent 3 days there. Day 1 mostly involved picking up our rental car, checking out our AirBnB (which was just off the road to Hana in a town called Haiku) and then checking out the beach. Charlie was NOT  a fan of the water and I was just instantly filled with anxiety and dread at what the next week would bring if our poor boy wouldn't play in the ocean... Landon got him to go in and swim a little bit, but he mostly cried the whole time! :(

The next day Landon got to go kiteboarding in the morning and Charlie and I stayed home so he could rest/nap. Then we went beach hopping to Paia, Maluaka, and Makena. Poor Charlie was still not a fan of the water and would seriously have to be alllll the way up on the beach as far away from the water as possible and would cry if a wave came remotely close. He didn't even want to turn his back to the water to take a picture with me! So he mostly played in the sand. I tried to boogie board and gave everyone watching a fun show while I wiped out over, and over, and over. :)

Maui Day 3 Landon went kiteboarding again and this time we went too and watched him. After that we drove up to Kapalua Beach. I had done a lot of research and tried to find a really cool beach that hopefully wouldn't have as many waves so Charlie would actually swim... Well, it was an AWESOME little beach but it was pouring rain the whole time we were there. I was sooooo sad! We tried to play a little bit, but we were just drenched and cold. So we headed to my favorite pizza place on earth, Lahaina Pizza Co. I have been telling Landon about this pizza for YEARS when I went as a nanny and he was worried I had talked it up... But he was not disappointed at all! It truly is the BEST. Then we walked around the Lahaina beach front with all the cute stores, got some shave ice, and just had a really fun night!

Maui Day 4 was our last day before heading to the Big Island to see my sister and her family. Someone local told us about "Baby Beach" so we decided to check that out in the morning before our flight. Holy cow it was HEAVEN and perfect for Charlie! I wish we would've discovered it sooner. It was protected by rocks, so there were NO waves and basically a big pool for all the babies (seriously, soooo many babies were at this beach. It was adorable). Charlie FINALLY played in the water and had so much fun! We were only able to stay for a few hours and then we hopped on a plane to see the Caputos! It was pretty late by the time we got there, but Charlie loved jumping on the tramp with Bodhi and we were just so happy to see family that we don't get to see very much.

Hawaii Day 5 was an adventure! Bodhi had a soccer game in the morning and Charlie had a lot of fun watching and kicking the ball around with Uncle Dan. Then we headed to Queen's Bath and Kiholo Bay. Queen's Bath is this fresh water spring in the lava tubes next to the ocean. It was so cool (literally!) Charlie hated it at first because it was so cold, but then he had fun going through the tunnels. After that we hiked along the beach for maybe 1-2 miles to these really cool lagoons and saw turtles. Charlie loved swimming since there weren't any waves and also loved riding on Landon's back. We finished the day at a yummy taco food truck.

Hawaii Day 6 was spent at Kealakekua Bay where Charlie went out across the whole bay on a paddle board with Landon. He was really brave and thought it was so fun! We had a picnic lunch and played some more soccer. That night we went to sushi with Ali and Dan while Sahalie and Bodhi watched Charlie (and taught him how to use chopsticks).

Hawaii Day 7 was probably my favorite day because we got to swim with dolphins... again! Every time we visit Ali and Dan we get lucky and go to a beach where dolphins just happen to be!!! We went to Ho'okena Beach where the sand is "salt and pepper" colored from all the volcanic rock. Charlie loved building (and destroying) sand castles with Ali and Bodhi and then especially loved getting buried in the sand. Then to see the dolphins, Landon swam Charlie out on a boogie board and he was able to see the tops of the dolphins while we stuck our faces in and saw them swimming around. There were SO many!! Then that night Landon got to go on a night dive to see the MANTA RAYS! Seriously a dream of mine, but of course I couldn't go because I am pregnant. Landon wasn't very excited to go since he was alone, but afterwards he was sooo glad he went. He said it was the coolest experience and by far his favorite dive. I can't wait to go back and do it when I'm not with child ;)

Hawaii Day 8 was our last day. The whole trip went by WAY too fast. Both Ali and Dan had to work that day so we adventured to Volcanoes National Park on our own. On our way down we stopped by the cutest little bakery (Punalu'u Bake Shop) and had the yummiest malasaldas (basically small donuts) and got to feed the fish. Then we stopped at Punalu'u Black Sand Beach. It really is so cool to see a beach where the sand is completely black! And of course the turtles were awesome too. Then we went to Volcanoes National Park. It was a little sad because half of it was still closed from the volcano earlier that year but we still got to see the steam vents and then hiked the Kilauea Iki trail. It was about 4 miles total and Charlie did almost all of it himself! It's actually a pretty cool hike down into the jungle and then you pop out on a crater. It's basically a lava lake from a volcano that erupted in 1959. It was super cool!

   

That night we said goodbye to the Caputos and then took a redeye flight home (and Charlie slept the WHOLE way!) We seriously had the best time and made so many memories that I know I'll treasure forever. I was so worried to bring Charlie on such a big trip, and of course there were lots of meltdowns from the lack of schedule/naps but he really did awesome and we had SOOOO much fun with him! It was also so much fun to spend all that quality time with Ali, Dan, and the kiddos. We don't get to see them much, so it was just the best. We love them!!! Charlie still asks almost weekly (I'm writing this post 3 months later... woops!) if he can go see them and jump on the tramp with Bodhi. We love you guys!
